Disclaimer:  Opinions expressed on this Protest Navbars Page are not neccesarily my own. I apologize for any offensive language contained in some Navbars. The Navbars are served up by Yahoo! to my page, and any offensive text is NOT a permanent part of my page text. It's only there when the Yahoo! Navbars load properly.

The reasons for this page's existence are:

1. To summarize non-verbally the amount of discontent amongst the Y!WebRing Community with the several implications of the SSNB;

2. To portray the feelings of the Y!WebRing Community about the major impact of the take-over by Y!WebRing on the WebRing system as it existed prior the changes brought to it;

3. To show the amount of discontent amongst the Y!WebRing Community with the way they felt they were treated at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/webringnews since September 5, 2000.

The Protest Navbar Stacks
This is a flock of sheep. I call them Why!-sheep
Most Navbars are in this one "Stack". They may feel like a herd of sheep. Below is another stack. Enjoy!
The Protest Navbar Stacks

I promised myself that there would be NO Navbars on my Site.

I have broken that promise. There now ARE Navbars on this page.

The purpose of this page is to show how there is an increasing number of Rings which indicate a clear protest against the Navbar, against the take-over of webring.org by Yahoo!, against needing a Yahoo! ID for joining or owning a Ring, and against the appalling way in which the original Owners of these Rings, the RingMasters, were ignored by Yahoo, and excluded in the take-over.

There now also is a growing number of Protest Rings, created as a result of how Ringmasters were treated at Yahoo! 'WebRingNews', the 'official' discussion Club of Yahoo!Webring. These Rings are also part of this Navbar Stack.

It is very regrettable that many Ringmasters felt irate, not just wtih the changes to Web Rings, but also with the events which took place at WebRing News, the "official" Yahoo!WebRing Club. Thousands of posts were deleted, and many, many Ringmasters were banned. Banned for speaking out, banned for getting angry. These events may well have contribuited considerably to the giant exodus of Web Rings from Yahoo!WebRing ot other Web Ring servers. The events at WebRing News are described on Page Four, "The Trouble with WebRing News. Many Ringmasters made statements which are reprinted on that page.

So what's all wrong with these Navbars? Here's what I think:

1. The Yahoo! servers, which serve up the Navbars, have been shown to be slower than my own free Web Site server most of the time.

2. On several occasions the Yahoo! servers have been TOTALLY out of action since September 5, 2000, the day that Yahoo!WebRing took over from WebRing.org. When that happens, NOBODY sees a Navbar belonging to ANY Ring on their Site, and ALL WebRing traffic stops.

3. Yahoo! servers which look after the "links", so that when you click on "Next" or "Prev" to arrive at the next Site in a Ring, have been down entirely as well.

4. I live in Australia. When we surf the Net, America usually is asleep. It is during those hours, that the Yahoo! servers are usually down.

5. Before Yahoo! took over, Ringmasters could make ANY image, and any number of images, to go with a WebRing control set. With the Yahoo!WebRing system, you are allowed just ONE image, a 50 x 50 pixel image.
Since that is the case, I don't feel it is "my" Ring anymore.

6. On any WebRing I create I want to include a "HOME" link. It informs people why you can or cannot join the Ring, ans I can tell as much as I like about the Ring. A Ring is MY Club. A Yahoo!WebRing Ring does not allow a HOME link. It seems that they are 'Property of Yahoo!WebRing', and no longer my property.

7. It has been demonstrated already that the Yahoo! Navbar is an easy vehicle for cookies and bugs, because the images are served from ANYWHERE, and by ANYBODY. The Navbar "Banned by webringnews Ring" (second from the top) was created as a demonstration that cookies can be served; it carries to your computer a demonstration cookie by www.privacy.du.edu. On the page "About Cookies" you can view two other cookies I have been able to locate as coming in with the Navbars.

An important note: I only have joined Yahoo! WebRings which express this protest. To visit my "serious" Web Rings, you can visit the page which lists all my Web Ring memberships. Go [ HERE ] to directly visit this Page.
