This is my list: 40 things I would like to do by age 40. (It's one of those blog things going around. The 40 seems rather arbitrarily picked, but 40 is nice and far away and I can imagine doing lots of things by that time...so I'm not complaining!)
1. Graduate from university. (That seems obvious, but sometimes I wonder.)
2. Get a job I like.
3. Earn enough money to pay income taxes (hey, start small...)
4. Go off the meds.
5. Get a Master's.
6. Own a home (house, condo, shack in the middle of nowhere, whatever).
7. Learn to drive. Dammit! And I suppose once I get behind the wheel and learn to drive, it would be nice to...
8. Own a car.
9. See a performance of Turandot. And something else with Young Ok Shin in it.
10. Live in Montreal, even if just for a summer.
11. Go back to the UK. Repeatedly, I hope.
12. Date a man (a straight man) who likes opera, or at least appreciates why I do. (Actually, just a really good friend who likes opera would be good.)
13. Get published. As in paid.
14. Write a story with an actual plot.
15. Meet my eventual husband.
16. Get married.
17. Have children (two, I think).
18. Learn more French, enough to not need to read the subtitles at the movies.
19. Learn Gaelic (Irish or Scottish, I'm easy) well enough to conduct a conversation at the level of a filthy-minded toddler.
20. Pick up singing again and get back my perfect pitch.
21. Sing something in a karaoke bar (or other public forum, I suppose) and kick ass.
22. Read Psalms, Paradise Lost, and the entire Divine Comedy. Really. I mean it. (So far: most of the Inferno but that's it.)
23. Visit every province and territory (I have been in PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and BC; six to go.)
24. And New York City, because I never have.
25. And Japan.
26. And Ireland.
27. Learn to swing-dance. (Yeah, shut up.)
28. Hit a triple-digit weight and stay there.
29. See Citizen Kane.
30. Go skiing, so I know what the fuss is about.
31. And scuba diving, because it sounds like fun.
32. Learn JavaScript. And Flash.
33. See Sloan in concert.
34. Hell, just see a lot more rock concerts. (As of writing I've only seen two, which seems quite pathetic.) Ideally in venues smaller than the Molson Amphitheatre. (I lied: when I wrote that, I'd actually seen three. I forgot about the REM street concert in Toronto, which was SO FUCKING COOL, although it was on my lunch break and I had to leave it halfway through to go back to work. After writing my list, I went to the concert on the Hill and saw Buck 65/Crush/Sarah Harmer/OLP/The Tragically Hip, which is a good start. Since then: Nathan Wiley/Sarah Harmer at the Rebecca Cohn - Sarah Harmer was lovely but Nathan Wiley must have been having an off night, 'cause I refuse to believe he's always that boring.)
35. Be someone's beard (at a family event or something). I think it would be rather interesting if I knew that's what I was doing.
36. Be someone's bridesmaid.
37. Take a road trip with someone other than my parents. (No offense to my parents.)
38. Use my adult status and authority to kick some ass on behalf of my kids. Or someone else's kids. Whatever.
39. Do something that would qualify as activism. Haven't yet decided what (I suppose if I had, I would have done it, no?)
40. Ride in a hot air balloon. Or something.
