John Colter was a resourceful and colorful mountain man who, on one
occasion, escaped from the Blackfeet (a Native American Tribe in the Wyoming
area) by running naked and barefoot for some six miles, swimming down a
river, and walking several hundreds miles to Fort Lisa (see John
Colter's Escape ).
I suggest a new, clothing optional triathlon in honor of John Colter.
The triathlon would consist of a six mile run, a one to two mile swim down
the same river, and a bicycle ride. The event would be held in late
in the summer as was when the escape occurred. Runners would be encouraged
to follow Colter's escape, as much as possible - with some some runners
fully clothed, some nude but wearing shoes, and perhaps a few nude and
barefoot.
A novel way to honor one of our pioneers by recreating one of his experiences.
