After the tragedy that took place in Littleton this past week and after listening to the news for several days, it has come to my attention that, as usual, the media has latched on to Marilyn Manson as a scapegoat for the killings. The cancellation of the Denver concert was almost inevitable, and many schools are now banning Marilyn Manson clothing, makeup, and anything else to do with the band, for fear that either the music and/or the image is somehow responsible for what happened. In the midst of these events, I have found some things to be true:

  • It is not the fault of the music, the clothing, the Internet, Nazi Germany, Hitler, or the Right to Bear Arms. These were many ingredients that went into the soup that ended in disaster, but no single item was the cause.
  • Had parents/teachers/police/faculty picked up on the many MANY warning signs exhibited by the gunmen and gotten them the proper help, this would not have happened. (You obsess over killing people, your poems and videos involve death and violence, you blatantly tell people that you're going to kill them..was there no school psychologist? And how is it possible to build and test pipe bombs in your garage without parental knowledge? "What did you do to this room, looks like a bomb went off in here!")
  • High school is not, was not, and never will be a kind place. Those who do not fit in will always be ostracized and ridiculed in various degrees by the popular kids, including the "jocks". This is an undeniable fact, ask anyone who didn't quite make the clique. It ranges from snide comments and teasing to physical abuse and should not have to be tolerated by anyone. Teachers, again, should have picked up on this and put a stop to it.
  • If provoked enough, anyone will snap. Tease a dog enough, and it will bite you. The gunmen were pushed over the edge and they reacted extremely violently.

I am not saying that what the gunmen did was good or that I support their decision to kill 13 people and then kill themselves, but I am trying to show that it is not the fault of the many "factors" that the media has thrown into this mess. They had a bad grip on reality and lost it. Everyone deals with teasing, but they chose a bad way to deal with it. But in my opinion, the teasing drove them to it and at the risk of sounding completely callous (anyone else with this ribbon does not necessarily support this opinion), I think this shooting is a hard-taught lesson: leave the goths/punks/freaks/outcasts/Manson fans alone. You never know which quiet withdrawn person is a sensitive dreamer and which is a Nazi fanatic.

In closing, myself and anyone else whose website bears this ribbon convey our apologies to the friends and families of those who lost loved ones in this preventable tragedy. We would like to state that not all Manson fans have homicide on their minds, and we will keep the victims in our thoughts while we continue to live our lives the way we always have. Peacefully.

If you would like to add linking back to this page, as well as the ribbon, use this code and stick it *somewhere*.

Hopefully that will work. I'll make a list on this page of everyone who linked to it, so write me back when you do and I'll add you.
