While most Turks including Presidents, PMs, party leaders understand and accept that there are some human rights infractions in Turkiye, but these have never been ethnic in nature. Usually in the nature of mistreatment at police stations, these infractions are prosecuted, and it is hoped that they can be changed with more education. Accepting such problems and wishing to improve the situation, the Turkish State has been taking steps to prevent such infractions, and doubtless will continue to do so. Race and ethnicity are NON-ISSUES in Turkiye. In legal terms, Article 10 of the Turkish Constitution is very explicit about this: ARTICLE 10. All individuals are equal without any discrimination before the law, irrespective of language, race, color, sex, political opinion, philosophical belief, religion and sect, or any such considerations. No privileges shall be granted to any individual, family, group or class. State organs and administrative authorities shall act in compliance with the principle of equality before the law in all their proceedings. |

More significantly, race and ethnicity are NON-ISSUES in Turkiye in cultural and traditional terms. Ethnic discrimination is neither a part of Turkish culture, nor a part of the Ottoman past, nor a part of modern Turkiye. Every Turk knows this in his very bones. But ethnic cleanings and genocides are a fundamental part of the European cultural past, and often attempts are made to export this to Turkiye-- in fact, attempts are made to project this evil on Turks particularly with respect to Turkish Kurds. While the very concept is repulsive
and foreign to Turkish citizens and Turkish cultures, I beleive that Turks
need to be informed about this European disease, and be in a position to
respond knowledgeably
to ethnicity based arguments in western terms, and
in terms of the "ethnic" facts of Turkiye. Therefore, I have included
this section primarily for the benefit of Turkish visitors.
