Figure skating in Romania is not such a popular sport. Unfortunately there are only 4 covered ice rinks in the country. There are some other ice rinks too, but these are not covered, and some of them are not working at all. And even the covered ice rinks are closed from April till August. So, romanian figure skating has problems, and the finnancial situation is not helping much.Take a look at this map for more info.
The yellow points represent uncovered ice rinks, while the red ones are the covered ice rinks.Here are some infos about every ice rink shown on the map.
- Brasov
In this county there are 2 uncovered ice rinks, one in the city of Brasov, and one in Poiana Brasov. But none of them was working in 1998-99. Still there were 3 figure skating clubs participating at the national competitions. Gheorghe Chiper, the men's National Champion is member of one of the clubs situated in this town. One of these skating clubs has the only precision skating team in the country.
- Bucuresti
This is the capital of the country. The Romanian Skating Federation headquarters is here. There is 1 covered ice rink, included in the National Sport Complex "Lia Manoliu". An uncovered ice rink is working too, being used only for public skating. There are 4 figure skating clubs in Bucuresti. This city hosts the ladies National Champion, Roxana Luca. Last two years the national team was practicing here.
- Buzau
In the city of Buzau the ice rink is not working for a long time, there is no skating club, but a decade ago there was figure skating activity.
- Caras Severin
In the capital of this county, in Resita a couple of years ago there was a working ice rink. The city had a figure skating club too. This moment there is no figure skating activity here.
- Cluj
In Cluj-Napoca the uncovered ice rink it's still working. (in winter of course just like other uncovered ice rinks) For 3 years there is no figure skating activity.
- Covasna
There is one uncovered ice rink in Sfantu Gheorghe. But in this town figure skating was never present.
- Galati
In the city of Galati the covered ice rink was closed for several years. Last year it was opened again for a while. Some time ago the figure skating was powerfull in this town - Cornel Gheorghe, who had the best results ever in international competitions and won 11 national titles started to skate in this town - but in present time there is no figure skating activity.
- Harghita
This is the only county in Romania, where are 2 covered ice rinks. Even like this in the city of Gheorgheni there is no figure skating club. Last year no figure skating competition was held there.
The other one in the city of Miercurea Ciuc, the capital of this county is one of the most used ice rinks in the country. There is one figure skating club, CSS Miercurea Ciuc. This club has the most skaters in country, and both of the junior National Champions (Noemi Bedo and Balint Miklos) are members of this club. This club won the cup of Romania (according to points won by skaters at Romanian Cup) the last ten years in a row. Figure skating was present here for the last 4 decades.
- Prahova
The uncovered ice rink was working in Ploiesti and is in the same situation like Buzau.
- Timis
The ice rink is situated in the city of Timisoara, and years ago there were a couple figure skating clubs. In these moments no figure skating club is active in this town.
