THE Interview Pop Princes Leave King of Pop,
Team Up With 80's Supergroup

From Knight Ridder News

Fueled by comments made by member JC Chasez in a recent interview, it has been reported that pop group NSYNC will be pulling out of the Michael Jackson/Jackson Five reunion concert to help record a tribute album for 80's supergroup Toto.

NSYNC, along with other acts such as Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and Janet Jackson, were to have gathered at Madison Square Garden for three nights of concerts spotlighting Jackson Five hits and also the solo hits of Michael Jackson himself.

NSYNC, who has covered Jackson Five tunes in the past, shocked the music world by announcing in a statement on Monday that they would no longer be a part of the concert and they sent best wishes to the Jackson family.

Chasez, who mentioned in a recent interview that he would most like to cover Toto's classic "I'll Be Over You", said that he was approached by lead singer Jean-Michel Byron, who he spotted at a Hardee's restaurant.  "I was going to the counter to order a roast beef sandwich when I turned to my friend and asked 'Isn't that the dude from Toto working the cash register?'"    I mean, this is Jean-Michel of Toto, coming up to ME in a Hardee's restaurant!  How could I say no?"

The CD, entitled "To Africa and Back" will have all of Toto's biggest hits sung by some of today's biggest pop stars, including Youngstown covering "Rosanna" and DreamStreet doing "Hold The Line."  NSYNC will not be doing "I'll Be Over You," but they will be providing vocals for the title track, "Africa."

At a tour stop in Texas, Chris Kirkpatrick said even though this was a difficult decision to make, it was one that needed to be done.  "While the Jackson Five may be one of the most influential bands in rock history, people tend to ignore the impact that Toto made on 80's culture.  And they were video vanguards.  Our video for It's Gonna Be Me, where we were tiny dolls?  That was our nod to the Africa, where they stood on books and sang.  They were ahead of their time, man."

Joey Fatone also weighed in on the last minute switch.  "People may say we're stupid to appear on the same CD as a group like i5, but this is a chance in a lifetime.  Someone in Toto banged Rosanna Arquette.  Not many people can say that.  Well, I mean, I can, but not many of the normal run of the mill people can say that, you know?"

And as for those rumors that pop princess Britney Spears would also be defecting to the Toto camp, boyfriend Justin Timberlake was quick to brush them aside.  "We asked her to come on the album with us, maybe do a duet or something, but she's pretty loyal to this Jackson thing.  Her and Jermaine are pretty tight."

The Toto tribute album "To Africa and Back" featuring NSYNC, Youngstown, PYT, Dream Street, LFO, B*Witched, Steps, and No Authority, is in production now and should hit Claire's Stores nationwide this fall.
