| Ok, this is a little history of the USS
Midway, first of the three 45,000 ton
CVB's started near the end of WWII,
was commissioned on Navy Day, Oct.
27, 45'. The product of the Newport
News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock
Company was named for the famous war
battle in which the Japanese lost four
carriers, a cruiser and some 250 aircraft.
The Battle of Midway marked a turning
point in WWII and proved conclusively
the potential of Naval aviation. Midway's
first major operation after shakedown
was a exercise in the North Atlantic called Operation Frostbite. With three destroyers and a fleet oiler she conducted tests to
evaluate the performance of various types of aircraft in the extreme weather. |
