FHM Changes
H to Stand for "Her" Unexpectedly
In an unannounced move, semi-popular
men’s magazine FHM has changed what its title stands for—from "For Him
Magazine" to "For Her Magazine"—with this month’s issue. Male readers
worldwide are shocked by the sudden switch.
"I didn’t even notice
it at first," said Harold Joyce, a subscriber from Miami. "It has
similar stuff in it: sex surveys, pictures of women in skirts, pictures
of women in bikinis, pictures of women frolicking, all that. And
the cover sure doesn’t give any clues."
Many men were unaware
of the change until after they finished reading the issue.
"I took the survey
and it said I couldn’t get a man because I’m too assertive," said Kenneth
Clay of Los Angeles. "I felt so depressed that I ate a pint of Rocky
Road, watched ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ and cried myself to sleep on the
couch. Uh, I mean I kicked my dog and threw beer cans at the TV."
Apparently the writers
for FHM found it easy to alter their writing styles and topics to redirect
focus toward women’s issues. This is fortunate because the switch
was "necessary," according to an FHM spokesman. He explained the
dramatic change by stating that it is a reaction to the fact that FHM is
unable to seriously contend with other men’s magazines like Maxim, GQ,
and Playboy.
"We haven’t decided
if we will continue being known as For Her Magazine," he said at a recent
press conference. "Right now we’re seeing if we can bridge the gap
between men’s and women’s reading material. At this early period
it seems as if we may be able to steer toward a time when men and women
can read one and only one misogynous yet feminist publication under a united
front of literary competence."
Still, other, less
positive individuals remain bewildered by the situation.
"I’m completely disoriented
now," said Joyce. "This whole ‘switch-a-roo’ FHM played on us has
turned my world upside-down. I don’t know whether to throw up or
punch the wall. Maybe next month’s issue will have a survey to tell
me what’s wrong and what I can do."
