Dick Vitale
Unimpressed by Dunk
College basketball announcer Dick
Vitale was unimpressed when Duke's Jason Williams laid down a breakaway
reverse dunk in Sunday's game against St. John's. The usually excitable
Vitale merely feigned a slight bit of interest in the jam.
“I suppose it was pretty
good,” he said. “But when you think about all the hours of work that
went into that dunk, it's just plain boring.”
During the game, Vitale
seemed indifferent to Williams’ steal of a sloppy Omar Cook pass that led
to the reversal.
“I've seen it a thousand
times,” he said. “I'd normally say that Pac-man just started a sweet
R and R, but it was lacking any real magic or surprise.”
Vitale failed to comment
on the dunk itself, simply stating that Williams “scored two.”
“I guess you could
call it a dipsy-doo dunkaroo,” he said, “but it was simply the product
of an intensive regimen of proteins and carbohydrates coupled with a high
fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fiber ratio. That's not what I
would call serendipitous.”
Other college hoops
experts were stunned at Vitale's calm demeanor.
“I would surely expect
an ejaculatory ‘Awesome bay-bee’ or something,” said former Kentucky coach
Rick Pitino. “Especially when considering what a PTP'er Williams
is.”
Vitale continues his
uncommon lack of appreciation for the play.
“It was awesome if
you'd never seen it before,” he said. “Just not with a capital A.
But, hey, if you're impressed with anaerobic muscles that produce energy
by breaking down glycogen to result in rapid contractions, that's your
thing.”
