It all started in the late 80's. Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, after going through a slew of drummers, finally settled down with a name and drummer: Dave Grohl. The world was introduced to Nirvana in '91 after their album "Nevermind" was released. This was Nirvana's first release on a major label, namely Geffen Records.
Nirvana revolutionized the music industry with the grunge genre of music. Kurt, Krist, and Dave created a unique blend of punk rock and the melodies of pop. The single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit the charts almost as soon as it was released.
The song was soon named the theme song of the new generation. Kurt Cobain was given the title of the "King of Grunge." Nirvana was very successful in achieving rock stardom, yet less of a success with keeping their original fans. Some say they'd sold out, yet there is little change between the style of the later album "In Utero" and their debut album on the Sub Pop label "Bleach."
Nirvana diexd on April 8, 1994, after frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home. As it seems, the pressures of being a rock star had overcome everything Kurt lived for, thus forcing him to put a gun in his mouth and leave behind a wife and beautiful child.
Nirvana was not the last, or the first, grunge band. There are several in the underground, and even some who have hit the mainstream. There are a few I'd like to mention here:
The first is a trio from Birmingham, Alabama, who call themselves Verbena. When I first heard them, I wrote down their name and title of the CD. They remind me so much of Nirvana, yet Verbena has a very unique feel to their music as well.
Second, I'd like to mention another trio from Australia: Silverchair. The band has drifted away from the style of the first album "Frogstomp," which mixed grunge and blues, to the experimental tunes of "Neon Ballroom," which features exotic instruments and orchestrael instruments.
Finally, I mention Local H, a duo who seems to be the most true to their style of music. The styles of the 3 albums they have released are very similar. The music itself is grunge at it's best.
